Our Retention systems are designed for use in storage, detention and retention at the end of our treatment trains. At the final point of our systems, the horizontal retention tanks can be installed for storage, and can come with several additions to suit your needs including baffles, pumping stations, pressurization and can be included at any position on the treatment train. These systems are designed to be installed underground, and as such have been design with high strength in compression and utilise ribs in their construction to assist in this.
All of PROTECTORS horizontal storage tanks utilise fibre reinforced polymers in their construction. Fibreglass Reinforced Polymer are strengthened materials that shows higher resistance to the corrosion which makes them ideal to be implemented for the tanks. They can be exposed to the water for years without being corrupted. Light weight, being resistant to high temperature and easy on-site installation are some of the desirable features that FRP indicates. Furthermore, FRP plates have higher mechanical strength which enables them to carry higher loads compared to plastics.

The installation procedure for this system follows the guidelines set out in the horizontal retention systems installation and maintenance manual. The entire systems come preassembled with all additional requirements such as valves, piping, guiderails and connections as required.
- Excavate an area for positioning with suitable easy placing of the tank and filling as well as for consolidating concrete for backfilling.
- Lifting and handling of the system must use appropriate processes. More details can be found in the Manual. All lifting apparatus (cables, straps, chains etc.) must be provided by a contractor.
- Installation can be conducted with or without appropriately designed feet for the product, each with their own following installation instruction details found in the Installation Manual.
- The system can be secured in several ways including Pea gravel and concrete surrounds, stabilised sand surroundings, concrete base and concrete surround, pea gravel backfill, mechanical anchoring etc. All have been clearly outlined in the installation manual provide by Protector.
- Allow for protection of inlets/discharge points/vents to be supervised by contractor. Connect each suitably designed fitting with the desired location for completion.
A necessary requirement of the use of the Packaged Maxipit is the need for regular inspection, maintenance and cleaning. This regularity is defined by the catchment area that it is located in and the features and properties of the surroundings. Regardless of the catchment area features, it is recommended by PROTECFRP that there is a mandatory inspection after 1 month of use after installation to determine the amount of capture of sediments and sludge build up and determination of regularity of maintenance can be taken from this. Furthermore, any form of weather conditions outside the norm of which the specific PACKAGED MAXIPIT is design fall, be it high rainfall or heavy storm conditions, an immediate inspection is recommended.
NB: when maintenance is conducted on the PACKAGED MAXIPIT system, ensure that all Workplace health and Safety precautions and directions are adhered to and the Confined space Regulations are carefully followed when required.
The cleaning and maintenance procedure is simple, requiring removal of the access cover and inserting a suction hose into the chamber, recommended use of a vacuum loader truck. Remove all forms of refuse and debris before entering the chamber. Always ensure cleaning is begun from the inlet side of the chamber and ensure carefully resecuring of the access cover when completed.
PROTEC WATER products are Quality Assured under BS EN ISO 9001:2000 – manufactured in a modern manufacturing plant ensuring the highest standard of quality control. Protector separators are filament wound by an advanced, patented, chop hoop filament winding process. This process produces not only circumferential strength as found in helical wound tanks, but also high longitudinal strength. The interlaminar shear strength permits tanks to be cut for manholes and pipework without undue loss in strength.
The dished ends are incorporated during the filament winding process, enabling tanks to be moulded and completed as virtually ‘one piece’ units. The manufacturing process is carefully monitored with a digital read out system. Chopping glass, winding glass, the resin-rich inner layer and main laminate resins are kept within specification parameters, thus minimising human error. Quality control procedures require each tank to be carefully inspected and tested.
All of the Protector range have been individually engineered to handle the toughest environmental situations and proven in the toughest environments such as high-water tables and volcanic soils. Problems in these areas have been solved with the installation of the HORIZONTAL TANKS.
The Packaged HORIZONTAL TANKS are engineered to the following Standards:BS4994 – 1987, AS/NZS 1546.1:1998. Hydraulic and civil engineering can also be provided to your requirements.

Even though the HORIZONTAL TANKS FRP casing and filter casing is relatively light weight, pound for pound they are stronger than alternative structures. The HORIZONTAL TANKS has no joins leaving a smooth, clean internal surface that resists scum and sludge build up and allows no leakage to the external environment. The lightweight configuration of the HORIZONTAL TANKS simplifies handling and reduces costs in transport, labour and handling down time.
